Mental Health First Aid

Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance. Physical first aid is accepted and widespread in our community, however most do not cover mental health problems. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches people the skills to help someone who they’re concerned about.

Course cost

$330 per participant

The 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid course will teach you how to provide initial support to other adults who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence based Action Plan. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

Mental health problems covered:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

Mental health crises covered

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours.

Note: This course is not a therapy or a support group

Course content

In this course you will learn knowledge and skills required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines until medical aid arrives. This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. The course also incorporates training and assessment relating to the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
 
  • Scene assessment & management
  • Recognition of life threatening conditions & response
  • Accessing emergency services (EMS) and convey incident details
  • Casualty assessment
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation for Adult, Child & Infant
  • Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs)
  • Management of an unconscious breathing casualty
  • Convey incident details to emergency services

Assessment

Written/oral questions, practical assessments & scenario based assessments.

For competency to be achieved, students must meet the benchmark of the assessment/evidence criteria for the units of competency listed in the training package on training.gov.au.

This requires students to have physical mobility to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted, single rescuer, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), on an adult resuscitation manikin that is on the floor. Please contact our friendly staff if you are affected by these requirements.

Inclusions

All eLearning training materials, or relevant CPR manual for face to face training and a key-ring face barrier and wallet DRS ABCD card.

Units of Competency

On successful completion you will be issued the following units of competency on an electronic Statement of Attainment:-

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Recommended recertification period

Under the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, it is recommended that those trained in HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation refresh their skills every 12 months in line with industry standards.

Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national / state / territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.
